How to Pay for ChatGPT Plus in China Without a Credit Card

Getting into ChatGPT is the easy part. Paying for it is where people in mainland China actually get stuck.

You have an account, the app opens, and then the upgrade button hands you a payment form that rejects everything you own. UnionPay is not accepted. A dual-currency Visa or Mastercard issued by a Chinese bank passes the form and fails at the charge. Alipay and WeChat Pay are not payment options at all.

So you search for a workaround, and you hit the second problem: almost every English guide on this topic is published by a company that sells recharge services. Their recommended method is, without exception, the one they profit from. We sell a VPN, not ChatGPT top-ups, which means we have no reason to steer you toward the expensive route.

This guide covers what still works in 2026, what it really costs, where you will get stuck, and whether Codex needs a separate subscription.

The Three Routes That Still Work

Paying for ChatGPT Plus from China comes down to one question: how do you get money into OpenAI's billing system when your cards are refused. Four approaches circulate online. Two are still worth using.

RouteStill viableWhat it costs you
US Apple ID plus gift card balanceYesAbout 30 minutes of setup the first time
Third-party recharge serviceYesTrust in a middleman that may disappear
Virtual credit card (VCC)Not recommendedMajor issuers have shut down
Buying a pre-made accountNot recommendedThe account is not yours and can vanish

This guide focuses on the first route. Not because it is the fastest, but because it depends on the fewest strangers. A gift card puts money into your own Apple account balance through Apple's own channel. No third party is holding it.

The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly. The first run takes roughly half an hour, you need an iPhone or iPad, and you need a US Apple ID. If you only want one month to try Plus out, a recharge service is genuinely less work. This is a choice between one-time setup cost and long-term stability, not a choice between good and bad.

Why the Virtual Card Route Died

This is the part most existing guides have not updated, so it is worth its own section.

Virtual credit cards used to be the default answer. You opened a USD card on a fintech platform, funded it, and attached it to OpenAI's billing page. Between 2022 and 2024 nearly every tutorial recommended this.

That changed in the second half of 2025. WildCard, the most widely recommended issuer, stopped its virtual card business around July 2025 and began refunding user balances. The brand continued as WildAI but no longer issues cards (shutdown and migration notice). Dupay exited over the same period.

These platforms all ran the same model: offshore card issuance funded by domestic payments. That model sits in a regulatory gray zone, so shutdowns tend to arrive without warning, and user balances freeze along with any active subscriptions.

Two things follow from this:

First, if a guide was published in early 2025 or earlier, the platform it recommends may no longer exist, no matter what the "2026 updated" label in the title says. Check whether the platform is still operating before you send it money.

Second, even a platform that is running today is a bet on next month. Annual subscriptions are an especially poor fit for this route.

The gift card route avoids that exposure entirely. The balance sits in your own Apple account, and Apple is not going to close next quarter.

The Gift Card Route, Step by Step

The full path is four stages: create a US Apple ID, buy a gift card, redeem it into your balance, and subscribe inside the app. We have separate guides for the first two stages, so this section concentrates on where people actually get stuck.

Start Here

No US Apple IDRead how to create a US Apple ID
Have one, not signed in on the App StoreRead switching to the US App Store without losing iCloud

All of the above doneKeep reading

Sign in to the US account inside the App Store only, not under Settings and your Apple Account. Signing in at the system level switches iCloud to the US region too, which breaks photo and notes sync.

How Much to Load: Do Not Budget the List Price

ChatGPT Plus lists at $20 per month on the web, and the App Store listing shows $19.99. Plenty of people load exactly $20 and then watch the charge fail.

Two things push the real number higher. Platform commission: the in-app price can exceed the web list price, and the amount shown in the purchase sheet is the one that matters. Sales tax: Apple charges tax based on the state in your billing address, so any state with sales tax adds more on top.

Read the amount in the confirmation sheet before you approve it, and fund your balance against that number rather than against $19.99.

Two ways to reduce the total, and they stack:

  • Use a sales-tax-free state in your billing address (Oregon and Delaware both work)
  • Simply load extra, around $25, so there is headroom

One rule catches people out: the gift card and the Apple ID must be in the same region. A US gift card will not redeem into a Hong Kong or Japan account. It just returns an invalid code error.

If your US Apple ID is brand new, download a few free apps and use the account normally for a couple of days before making a large purchase. A new account whose very first activity is a significant charge is far more likely to trigger a review.

Subscribing Inside the App

  1. Confirm the App Store is currently signed in to your US account
  2. If ChatGPT is already installed, delete it and download it again under the US account
  3. Open the app and sign in with your OpenAI account, which is a separate service account unrelated to your Apple ID
  4. Go to the upgrade screen and choose the option that pays through Apple
  5. Approve Apple's purchase sheet by double-clicking the side button, and the amount comes out of your Apple account balance

Step 2 is not optional. An app downloaded under a Chinese account cannot run a US in-app purchase, and if you skip the reinstall, the purchase option in step 4 will not appear.

Step 4 is where most people go wrong. The upgrade screen usually shows a more prominent button that sends you to OpenAI's own card checkout, which defeats the entire point. Look for the option that explicitly says it bills through Apple or the App Store.

Step 3 confuses people too. Your Apple ID and your OpenAI account are two separate things: Apple handles the money, OpenAI handles the service. You do not need to abandon your existing ChatGPT account to subscribe this way.

No ChatGPT account yet? Our ChatGPT sign-up guide covers it. An email address is all you need.

After You Subscribe

The purchase happens on your phone, but the benefit follows your ChatGPT account. Sign in to the same account on the web, Windows, Mac, or Android and you have Plus everywhere. Nothing extra to do.

Do You Need to Pay for Codex Separately?

No. Codex is not a separate product. It is included in your ChatGPT subscription, on the same account and drawing from the same usage pool. Subscribe to Plus and Codex works. Do not buy anything additional to use it.

Where Did the Codex App Go?

If you cannot find the Codex app, it was not discontinued. The entry point moved.

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI folded the standalone Codex desktop app into the unified ChatGPT desktop app on macOS and Windows. Codex survives as a dedicated workspace inside that app, alongside Chat and Work, and the older ChatGPT desktop app was renamed ChatGPT Classic (change notes).

If you were a Codex user, just update. The updated app is the new ChatGPT desktop app.

Can Free Accounts Use Codex?

It opens, but it will not get much done. After the merge, Chat, Work, and Codex are visible on every tier including Free, but free-tier quota is small enough that anything beyond a short task stops partway. Real use needs Plus.

Plus Quota Resets Weekly, Not Daily

Codex usage on the Plus tier is metered on a weekly cycle. Long automated runs can exhaust the week's allowance by Wednesday, leaving you with nothing until it resets. Save the quota for sessions that need it.

The Balance Looks Fine but the Purchase Fails

If none of the above matches, check three things in order:

  • Is the App Store on the US account? The top of the account screen shows which one. A Chinese account's balance cannot buy a US subscription
  • Is the balance genuinely sufficient? Recalculate against the purchase sheet amount, not $19.99
  • Did you just redeem the card? Balance updates occasionally lag. Wait a few minutes and try again

Invalid Code When Redeeming a Gift Card

This is almost always a sourcing problem. Cards priced well below market rate are usually of unknown origin, they fail at redemption, and in bad cases they get the Apple ID restricted. Buy through legitimate channels. Our gift card guide has a full section on identifying bad cards, and Apple's own troubleshooting page covers redemption failures.

Paying Is Not the Last Step

A completed subscription does not guarantee a working session. ChatGPT evaluates where your traffic comes from, and the service itself is restricted in some regions.

In practice, holding one stable overseas server beats switching between them. An unstable connection rarely shows up as a clean failure to load. It shows up as conversations cutting off mid-response, slow replies, or a sudden region-unavailable notice, and those are harder to diagnose than a page that simply will not open.

SealVPN provides stable overseas servers with one-tap connection, which suits sessions that need to stay up. Keep the connection running both while subscribing and while using the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need an iPhone?

For the gift card route, yes. You need an iPhone or iPad to complete the purchase. Once the subscription is active it works on the web and every other device.

If you have a foreign credit card, subscribing on OpenAI's site directly is simpler and cheaper. The US App Store route exists for people who do not.

What about Android?

Android can subscribe through Google Play, but a Google Play account in China needs an overseas payment method too, so you land back at the same wall. For Android users, a recharge service is currently the more practical option.

How do I cancel auto-renewal?

For subscriptions bought through Apple, go to Settings, your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel ChatGPT there.

Deleting the app does not cancel anything and the charges continue. If you only want one month, you can turn off auto-renewal the same day you subscribe and still use it through the end of the period.

Can I refund unused balance?

Apple account balance is non-refundable once loaded. Do not load a large amount on the first attempt. One or two months is enough.

Will this get my account banned?

Gift card purchases go through Apple's official channel and are not a violation. The real risks are narrower: buying cards of unknown origin, and account details that do not line up. Buy from legitimate sellers and keep your connection and account information consistent.

Which Route Should You Pick?

Your situationRecommendation
Have an iPhone, planning to use it long termGift card route. One-time setup buys stability
Just want one month to try itRecharge service is less work, but verify the platform is still operating
Android onlyRecharge service, or borrow an iOS device for the purchase
Have a foreign credit cardSubscribe on OpenAI's site directly. Simplest and cheapest
Mainly want CodexPlus is all you need. Codex costs nothing extra
Saw a guide recommending a virtual cardCheck whether that platform still exists

Back to the point at the top. Guides in this space expire quickly because the payment channels keep changing, and most of them are written by companies selling one of the options. The fastest way to judge whether a guide is still useful is to check whether the platform it recommends is operating today.

The gift card route is worth recommending not because it is the least work, but because every link in the chain sits inside Apple's own system rather than depending on a middleman who might close next month. The first run takes about half an hour. After that it is a top-up and a renewal.

Once you are set up, get a SealVPN account to keep the connection stable, and the rest is just using it.
